Plein Air Landscapes - Oil on board
By far... the biggest challenge of all personal persuits has been oil painting from direct observation of nature. It is the most intimate, playful and trying... yet potentially the most satisfiying practice.
Art (as life...) is almost always fragmented into innumerous individual scenes, compartmentalized specific fractions of the un-manageable whole, completely uncapturable... and yet, knowable by it's essense.
This plein air work aims to acknowledge the larger landscape while focusing on a tiny portion, a fragment of our vast and profoundly beautiful home.
While on vacation, I noticed small floatsom trapped in tide-pools and made a few drawings. Something about it really drew me in (no pun intended) and spoke to my curiosity. This is the first of several large canvases based roughly on sketches of sticks in suspension.
